Olympian Josh Davis is coming to Norman, Oklahoma to inspire local swimmers and promote the expansion of competitive swimming in the area.
Davis, winner of five Olympic medals, will teach his gold-medal technique to swimmers of The Sooner Swim Club (SSC) on Wednesday, November 15. This instructional swim clinic will be held at the University of Oklahoma Murray Case-Sells Swim Complex from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Davis hopes his visit will also jump-start the development of a new swim center in Norman.
The Pisces Project (www.piscesproject.org), seeks to build a $5 million state-of-the-art swim complex for Norman public schools and the city’s competitive swimming programs.
An informational meeting about the proposed swim center will take place at the Norman Public Library on Thursday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. This meeting is open to the public.
“The competitive swimmers, school children, and adults of the Norman-area deserve their own swim center,” Davis said. “Thousands of people in the community will benefit from this proposed facility.”
Founded in 1963, The Sooner Swim Club has produced numerous state champions and nationally recognized swimmers. The team currently shares practice space at the Murray Case-Sells Swim Complex.
“This swim center and its aquatic education program will promote good health and water safety while preventing an ever-growing trend of obesity,” Davis said. “The sport of swimming is not only fun and a great source of exercise, but also teaches young people valuable character traits like discipline, work ethic, and goal setting.”
Davis was the only man in the world to win three gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Four years later at the Sydney Olympics, he won two silver medals as Co-Captain of the U.S. Swim Team.
Davis is excited to visit Norman for personal reasons as well. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Casey and Danielle Bookout, were both standout athletes at the University of Oklahoma.
